What is a bamboo t-shirt?
These days many undershirts are made of bamboo. The fabric comes from the Moso bamboo plant from China. That species is also on the giant panda's menu, but the bamboo for clothing comes from cultivated fields. Bamboo isn't a tree but a type of grass, and one of the fastest-growing plants in the world: some specimens grow as much as a metre a day. The plant also thrives in almost any climate and needs few pesticides. What you end up wearing is bamboo viscose: the stalks are chemically processed into fibre, and that step does cost water and chemicals. Bamboo shirts come in different colours, fits and collars.
Properties of bamboo
Clothing made of bamboo viscose feels silky soft. You barely notice you're wearing a shirt under your regular clothes, which is exactly what you want from an undershirt. The fabric is airy: it feels cool in summer and holds on to warmth in winter. That also helps against perspiration, so the clothing doesn't quickly start to smell musty and stays fresh longer than cotton. So you need to wash a bamboo shirt less often, and you're less likely to get sweat marks in it.
